Best Ever Sugar Cookie Recipe

Real talk: We miss Pennsylvania BADLY right now. Heading there for Thanksgiving was just a small taste of the seasons, our family, friends and a much more affordable life. Don’t get me wrong, Hawaii is beautiful with a never-ending list of fun things to do, but Pennsylvania will always truly be home for both Dane and me.
We love spending snowy Christmases with both our families…and it’s not just because of my dad’s token “pile photos” for everyone’s gifts!
In an effort to celebrate like usual, we are busting out every tradition that our parents keep and adding a little Hawaiian flair, which includes lots and lots of baking! My mom always made sure that baking was a family affair at our house — I mixed, she rolled out the dough, my sister whipped up the icing and sprinkles was fair game for anyone! This year, as I rolled out her famous sugar cookie recipe, I couldn’t help but smile when I realized I was adding my own special touch — our personalized Christmas cookie stamp!
Dane and I had so much fun preparing these cookies and really getting in the spirit of the holiday.
You Will Need:
3/4 cup shortening or butter
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 t. vanilla
2.5 cups flour (I use Cup4Cup)
1 t. baking powder
1. Mix all ingredients together.
2. Set dough in the refrigerator and let chill for 1 hour.
3. Roll flat on a floured surface with a rolling pin and use your favorite cookie cutters.
4. Top with sprinkles and bake at 400 degrees for 6-8 minutes.

Have you taste tested these cookies? What do you think?

I can testify that those cookies are delish!

  • The cookie stamp is so fun! And I love the puppy stockings. Both cutout cookies and stockings are a must around here – some of my favorite Christmas traditions. So sorry you'll be missing your family this year! Hope it's fun to recreate a few of your family traditions and also take the opportunity to come up with your own special little family ones.

  • Omg those pile photos are hilarious! I love different ideas like that. Being away on Christmas is so, so hard. We haven't been home (Michigan) for Christmas in..I think 3 years now, but the first year I was so sad, I quietly locked myself in the bathroom and cried. I felt like it would never be the same. But now I actually look forward to our own Christmas routines. We get takeout Chinese food and go to the movies and maybe even get drunk if we feel like it, because we can. I do miss the madness of having a ton of family around, and of course the baking, because nowadays if I bake anything…it's all for me lol. So I don't. But, life can't always be the same right? Changes are good. We are sooooo excited this year though because it's our dogs first Christmas, and even though he will have no clue it's different than any other day, we're still going to buy him everything and see if he will open the presents and all that stupid stuff haha.

    But real talk…Hawaii?!?!? j-e-a-l-o-u-s girl.

  • We are going to be spending Christmas away from our families too, a first for both of us as well, and it will be tough! We have been thinking of things to do to make it ours, since it will technically be our first Christmas together, but also make it more bearable being away from our families. We are hosting Christmas dinner for our friends and have a big group coming over. In a way, I'm really excited about it because a) I love hosting parties and b) it is kind of a reminder of this whole military friend family thing again that the group of friends seems to be so much closer in the military because of exactly this- everyone constantly away from home on the holidays.
And if it makes you feel any better, maybe just a little- PA HAS BEEN SO STINKING HOT LATELY, OMG. Does NOT feel like Christmas.

  • I totally want to try your cookie recipe and have baked two cookies so far for this Christmas season and am due for more and this might be my next one to try. Thanks for sharing and am with you on listening to Mariah Carey's Christmas music, too right now 😉

  • It would be so hard to be away from home and family on Christmas. I hope you guys have a merry one! It seems like you're well on your way!

  • Those pile photos are the best! I may need to borrow this tradition…. 🙂
