If you’re maybe new around here, you might not know this but – I really love animals. I mean – I’ll just be honest here – I like animals more than I like most people. My dogs > anyone else – ALL DAY LONG. Sadly, Hawaii has notoriously high rates for homeless animals and the rehoming and abandonment of pets. It makes my heart hurt just thinking of it. I’ve blogged a little bit about the type of things that go on here. I’ve started really becoming an advocate for animals here by writing our senators, petitioning lawmakers and donating my time when I’m able.

That said, anytime I discover programs that can benefit pets in need, I love to share them! I know that my dogs are happy and healthy at night in a warm bed with lots of treats and toys – but that is not the case for many animals. Some go to bed hungry, cold, in pain, or worse.PetSmart Campaign - Buy A Bag, Give A MealPetSmart® is celebrating their 30th anniversary this year and they are celebrating in a BIG way. And more than just paw-ty cake and treats…

This week,  they announced the launch of their new “Buy a Bag, Give a Meal™” program, where for every bag of dog or cat food purchased online and at all its 1,500-plus stores across the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico, the leading pet specialty retailer will donate a meal to a pet in need. We buy two bags a month for Bill at PetSmart, so I know that at least two meals will be getting donated on his behalf each month!

The program runs March 1-Dec. 31, 2017, and PetSmart expects to donate more than 60 million meals.

Judy and Bill both agree that this initiative is paws-itively awesome. In order to effectively distribute the pet food directly to pets in need, PetSmart is working with their nonprofit partner PetSmart Charities® plans to collaborate with national nonprofits. I mean…60 million meals – surely some of those are coming here to help the pets of Hawaii! We have many nonprofit shelters and rescues on island that I know will benefit from this amazing celebration!

“At PetSmart, we love pets and we believe they make us better people. To celebrate our 30 years of continued commitment to helping pets in need every day and as a trusted partner to pet parents everywhere, we want to celebrate by giving back even more,” said Eran Cohen, chief customer experience officer, PetSmart. “Throughout 2017, every time pet parents purchase any bag of dog or cat food in our stores or online, they can rest assured they are also helping feed pets in need. When their pets eat, pets in need eat, too. It’s that simple.”

What a great campaign! It always makes me so sad to imagine cold and hungry dogs, I donate to the local animal rescue as much as I can. Thanks for this post!
