A Recipe For The Perfect Beach Day

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Dr Pepper®. The opinions and text are all mine.

Living in Hawaii, I know a thing or two about going to the beach – which ones to go to depending on the season, what to pack, what to wear…you see where this is going! For anyone who is hitting the sand this summer, I’m sharing my recipe for the perfect beach day!

Good Weather

Maybe it’s just me, but unless the sun is blazing hot – I’d rather be at a pool. Overcast days in Hawaii often mean wind, and when there’s wind, the sand will blow…often at high speeds pelting you like hail…count me out! Cloudless skies and hot sun are a must for the perfect beach day.

Food

What is it about hot weather that just makes you hungry? My rule of thumb for beach food is sweet, salty and savory. It’s a great way to cover all the typical cravings without forcing yourself to buy snacks from a local food truck or grocery store. A little extra prep work and you are good to go for the whole afternoon.

My sweet is always fruit. There’s something that’s so refreshing about cold, juicy fruit. I turn to frozen grapes, Dane likes papaya and we always bring along an apple or two for the dogs to share. For the savory portion of our cooler, my go-to is chips and salsa or chips and guacamole. This is my beach eating downfall, because I can easily put away all that I pack alone. I guess it’s my kryptonite ? I also put my chips in the cooler, because if they go in my beach bag they end up in crumbs. Is there anything more annoying? Our cooler has a hard exterior, so I know my precious corn chips are safe from being smashed tucked inside! And finally, my salty cooler treat is a nut of some kind. It usually ends up being peanuts, because I cook a lot of Thai dishes at home, thus we always have peanuts at the ready.

Drinks

Bopping around all day in the sun is going to make you thirsty, so plan ahead in the drink department. Might I suggest two coolers…! Particularly if you’re heading to the surf and sand with friends. The more everyone is outside, the thirstier you’re all going to be. And let me just tell you something – when you’re thirsty on a deserted beach with no nearby stores staring at an ocean full of water you can’t drink…well, it’s not fun! Take my word on that one. In addition to plenty of water, be sure to bring drinks that are easily shareable with friends like 12 packs of soda or juice (and a bag to recycle cans or bottles!). I’m not a huge soda or juice drinker day-to-day, but I do love the taste of something cold and refreshing (and not water) on the weekends.

Pro tip for 21 and over beach days: When Dane and I first started dating, he taught me the perfect trick for making mixed drinks at the beach. Because bringing large glass bottles to beaches is generally frowned upon and can lead to some messy accidents, pack tiny travel bottles of your favorite liquor and 12 oz. cans! Our favorite is cherry rum and Dr Pepper from Walmart. One big swig at the beginning clears out enough room in the can to pour your rum in without bringing cups, stirrers, ice, etc. It’s great for beach days, because it’s quick, no muss or fuss and easy – plus, let’s be honest…I’m not a traveling bar! No room in my beach bag for too many extras.

Rafts, Tubes & Floats

Warm summer beach days in Hawaii mean calm waters on the North Shore, which is p-e-r-f-e-c-t for floats and rafts. What is more relaxing than setting sail on a raft or floaty? Nothing, I assure you!

Here’s a bonus for all my fellow Dr Pepper enthusiasts – when you buy any Dr Pepper 6/15-8/15 at Walmart this summer, you can upload your receipt here to get the raft I have (it’s HUGE!) and/or other prizes like:

Spend $5, get a unicorn beverage holder inflatable

Spend $10, get a Walmart E Gift Card worth $5

Spend $20, get a 6 pack can/bottle holder with ice pack

Spend $40, get a Dr Pepper bottle shaped pool float

Good Book

I love reading on the beach and have a whole list of books to read this summer. I always tuck a book into my beach bag so I’m prepared for a solid 1-2 hours of peace, quiet and insane literature (a la Gillian Flynn).

Sunscreen

I recently discovered the perfect sunscreen and I love it so far. The continuous spray is my favorite, but only because it kind of does all the work for me. Their creams, lip treatment and other blocks are just as good! The main draw is that the leading sun blocking ingredient is zinc oxide, making it nearly indestructible in the water and as reef friendly as sunscreen gets. Plus…it smells delicious!

Sunglasses

I’ve talked about protecting your eyes before, but it bears repeating – protect those baby blues (or browns or greens or hazels) just like you would your skin! UVA/UVB rays are powerful and if you’re going to be outside all day, you’re going to need sunglasses. Plus, who wants a headache from staring into the sun all day?!

Long Sleeve Cover-Up

I know this one may seem kind of strange, but when the rays are blazing, there’s a good chance your skin is burning. If you plan to stay at the beach all day (yes please – who doesn’t?!) then I highly recommend a long sleeved cover-up for the afternoon sun.

Optional Add Ins:

Boats, Dinner Food, Tent (for making a full night of it!), Dogs, Volleyball
