Last Sunday, I woke up with the hiking itch. It doesn’t strike me often, but when it does the only thing that will cure it is more cowbell a stellar hike, complete with a ton of sweating and water breaks. Not to be outdone by our last hike, I figured we should take on the Hanauma Bay Ridgeline and Sea Cliffs. Once we had ourselves all packed up, we started our trek, parked and began the hike.
Hiking Hawaii: Hanauma Bay Ridgeline and Sea Cliffs | Oahu
At first it was paved — I CAN TOTALLY DO THIS.
Then it became a bit more rocky — I’M A LITTLE AFRAID, BUT I CAN STILL TOTALLY DO THIS.
Finally, it appeared we were on the edge of a cliff and the only way to continue was to go down — OH HECK, I THINK MY STOMACH JUST FELL OUT OF MY SHORTS.
Then it flattened out a bit — WHEW! I THOUGHT I MIGHT DIE.
Only to be matched with an equally treacherous cliff of sea rocks that glistened in the sun — OH MY HECK, I CANNOT CONTINUE!
And this went on and on for nearly two hours, before we were greeted with an absolutely stunning view of the Pacific Ocean. I was totally in awe of how beautiful Hawai’i is, which is ironic considering I say that every single time we go out and explore new areas. But for real! This was something I’ve never experienced before and I’m so happy Dane kept encouraging me to continue on. Truth be told, I wanted to quit on more than one occasion, but I’m so happy I didn’t. Plus, we got alcoholic milkshakes afterward to celebrate our win of a hiking find.
*On a very real and somber note, we found out post-hike this is actual an illegal summit here on O’ahu that has claimed many lives.
Yep, I scaled up and down that beast! |
And this one too! |
1 hour in — I was hot, slightly panicky and wondering when we would EVER get there. |
That’s one of our favorite hikes — KoKoHead Crater — in the distance! |
Overall this hike was really beautiful and fun, but ultimately – it’s illegal. For a full list of hikes on Oahu, check out this post. And don’t forget hiking essentials for Hawaii if you plan on making a trek here!
