When I did my reader survey last month, I was kind of shocked at the number of people who wanted to know what a typical day in my life looked life. I’m a pretty open book on Instagram stories and I don’t think I have a particularly interesting life or schedule, but I’m happy to share what is typical for me, so here we go…
A Day In The Life
I chose to do a week day since our weekends are kind of different no matter how much I try to plan, HA! And I snapped all the following with my iPhone – no fancy edits here. You’re getting the real deal!
5:40AM – My alarm goes off. And no – not on my phone. Within the two chocolate Labs that call this address home. They like to eat and go outside before 6AM (regardless of any sleeping in plans I might have), so I wake up, brush my teeth and feed them.
And to answer the inevitable questions…yes all of my sleepwear is this attractive 😉 But honestly..we keep our new house an icebox (hello 65 degrees) and I love feeling cozy.
“Hey Lady, get to steppin’ on that food…”
As soon as I give them their food, I turn the coffee maker on to get things going. Coffee, coffee and more coffee please!
I try to do my run first thing in the morning before it gets too hot and I ALWAYS document it on Instagram. If you follow my Insta-stories I’m sure you know this already 😉 It’s a sort of “check in” for me, but so many people have said it inspires them to get out and get moving, which I love!
Once I’m back – I won’t lie….I usually putz around my house and don’t shower right away. I know it’s gross, but I truly think that if I showered right away, I would be way too tempted to get back into bed. 9-11 are my writing hours, so during that time I go into my office, put my phone on airplane and get down to work. I often shut my door so the dogs screwing around with one another can’t even bother me. I’m SO productive during this time, so I really try to maximize it as best I can. I SWORE I took a photo of my messy desk, but I can’t find it anywhere so here’s a snap of what my office used to look like.
From 11-12 I take the dogs out, go for a walk, lift weights, call my parents or friends on the mainland – anything mindless. It’s kind of my time to decompress, so it really depends on what my morning was like. Some days I lay in my bed and scroll Instagram or Twitter, other days I need to let out pent up frustration so I head right for the free weights.
I use 12-1 as my lunch time, but I’ll be totally honest I usually skip it or eat it at my desk. Noon marks close of business on the East coast (which is where a lot of the freelance outlets I write for are located), so I’m usually fielding e-mails and calls from editors asking for things last minute. I know if I’m working on a tight deadline I can kiss any semblance of a peaceful lunch goodbye, but usually it means I take a few breaks to do stupid Snapchat filters. #realtalk
1-4 is work time Monday, Wednesday and Friday and on Tuesday,Thursday its free time that allows for grocery shopping, errands, returns, sitting on my butt…whatever! I try to set up at least 1 or 2 coffee dates or lunches throughout the week with friends I have here on the island, which always gives me something fun to look forward to!
I leave work (aka: a room in my house) at 4:30 each day and turn my computer off so I’m not tempted to do anything else. For someone who works from home, this is crucial for me, otherwise I’m a total workhorse and won’t stop.
“Okay mom, time to be done for today!”
I love meal planning, so I usually already have my meal prepped in the refrigerator (more about our meal planning here), so putting it together is pretty simple unless I’ve decided to go rogue and make a complicated dish. Dane gets home around 5 and we usually eat right away. Total early bird special over here! After we clean up dinner, we take the dogs for a long run, walk or to the park and exhaust them with a tennis ball. If I’m being 100% honest – this is my favorite time of the day. Dane and I give each other 15 minutes each to talk about work shit and then we talk about whatever we want…but not work. It’s important that there’s a good separation of work and home life for us, especially since I sometimes feel like I’m always in the same environment.
The end of our day is pretty quiet, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. If we can’t find anything we want to watch on Amazon Fire, we grab whatever book we are reading and head to bed. Once in awhile we will get hooked on a show or series (most recently: The Laci Peterson Documentary on A&E) and stay up late binge watching whatever it is. More times than not we prefer the book route and for us, it’s lights out at 8:30. I’m happiest asleep by 9 and then we wake up and do it alllll over again 😉 Oh…and the dogs are always the first ones in bed, even though we kick them out before we fall asleep!
And that’s a wrap! I kind of had fun documenting my day (even though I usually think I’m super boring). What does your day look like?
