Live Like A Local: Palm Springs, California

Travel, USA · September 1, 2017 · 2 Comments

It’s time for another Live Like A Local destination!

Live Like A Local is a series I wanted to create in an effort to expand the travel section of my blog beyond where I live and have personally been. I wanted to create a resource for anyone reading who might be 1. traveling to other areas, 2. live in other areas or 3. moving somewhere new! I’ve been to some cool places, but I haven’t lived everywhere and what is better than some insider knowledge, eh?!

View all my Live Like A Local posts here.

Now, on with the show! Today we are visiting Palm Springs, California!

Name: Andrea Ament

City: Palm Springs, California.

Note: I don’t live there, but I visit enough to make me a local expert!

What is it about Palm Springs that makes it different from other cities?

It’s warm in the winter and hotter than hell in the summer! It has always been a weekend escape from Los Angeles, but in the last few years, social media has really given the town a boost!

What is the best time of year to visit?

Anytime but summer! Summer is considered the off season because it is simply too hot. Half the city shuts down, restaurants close for a few months, and shops have limited hours, but if you don’t mind the heat, you can also find some great hotel deals!

Are there any cool festivals or annual events that are not to be missed here?

Modernism Week! From home tours to design parties to double-decker architectural tours, if you’re a fan of Midcentury Modern architecture and design, this is the event for you! If you’re not in town for Modernism Week, you can still experience some MCM by downloading my free Palm Springs Door Tour map.

Places to eat?

Jake’s, Norma’s at The Parker, The Draughtsman, El Jefe at The Saguaro, Frank in Bun, The Tonga Hut.

Places to shop and what to buy?

Go thrift shopping or shop vintage at several of the shops in town including The Private Collection, The Frippary, Dazzles, and The Shops at Thirteen Forty-Five.

What do you do on a Friday night?

Hit one of the restaurants for dinner and drinks or stay back at the hotel and lounge by the pool. Your choice!

Cool places to stay?

The Parker, The Saguaro, Korakia Pensione, The Ace Hotel, Sparrow’s Lodge, Colony Palms, or vacation rentals such as The Weekend House or The Amado.

If there isn’t a major airport nearby what is the best way to get there?

Fly direct to Palm Springs International or fly into Los Angeles (either LAX or Burbank) and rent a car.
