What is it about the holidays that just makes you want to test out new recipes? Maybe it’s just me, but from September through December, I’m combing my Pinterest boards for ideas and inspiration to infuse a little fun into our eating and drinking. My husband is a fan of Old Fashioneds and he will be the first to volunteer as a taste tester for any of my cocktail recipes experiments! I decided I would kick things up a notch with his favorite Old Fashioned recipe and create something that was a little bit festive for the holidays. This Blood Orange Cranberry Old Fashioned cocktail recipe was born – it’s equal parts classic and fun with a delicious citrus twist.
Blood Orange Cranberry Old Fashioned
Like I said, Dane loves a good Old Fashioned and to be honest – I was never quite sure what went in them before we met. I knew of the drink, of course, but not exactly how they came together. When we met and he introduced me to the fascinating world of bourbon, I learned quite a bit! Sidenote: For any bourbon aficionados, I highly recommend the documentary NEAT.
To make your own Blood Orange Cranberry Old Fashioned, you will need:
1 sugar cube or 1 tsp. simple syrup
2 splashes bitters
2 oz. bourbon
1 oz. blood orange syrup
splash cranberry juice
lemon or orange peel for garnish (make sure you peel is over the glass so the oils from the fruit seep into the tumbler)
1. In a bar tumbler, muddle your sugar cube/simple syrup and bitters
2. Pour in bourbon and stir.
3. Add in blood orange syrup and splash of cranberry.
4. Drop in one ice block and add garnish.
5. Enjoy!
