Who is ready for another Hiking In Hawaii post? Truth be told, Makapuu Lighthouse Trail is an easy hike here on Oahu and one that Dane and I do pretty frequently. The views cannot be beat, so I’m unsure how it’s taken me this long to share about it! Makapuu Point Lighthouse is situated on the southeast corner of Oahu and is one of the best Oahu hikes, because it’s entirely paved and a hike that is good for the whole family. If you’re on the hunt for a good hike on Oahu or are just looking for some pretty Hawaii photos, today’s post is for you 🙂
Hiking In Hawaii: Makapuu Lighthouse Trail
As I said before, the Makapuu Lighthouse Hike path is entirely paved, so Dane and I usually opt for our Chacos (6 Reasons Chacos Should Be Your Next Shoes Purchase), but we’ve also worn sneakers. It’s up to you!
Makapuu Lighthouse Trail
Park your car at the parking lot and start your trek up to the Makapuu Lighthouse! It’s an out-and-back hike that takes around 45 minutes roundtrip, but we always take much longer because we love to sit at the top and take in all the views. It’s seriously stunning! The last time we packed some snacks and water and just hung out on a rock off-the-beaten path to enjoy watching whales.
Can you spot the sea turtle?
Makapuu Lighthouse Trail offers panoramic views of Waimanalo Bay from one side and deep ocean blues for miles from the other. Seeing just vast ocean for miles never gets old to me!
Makapuu Tidepools + Spotting Whales
To note, even though the path up to the top is entirely paved, the incline does get a bit steep. There are stopping points to catch your breath and take in the views, but there are not any guard rails, so just be mindful of where you step…the drop off is quite steep! Make sure to stop at the placard that talks about whales and see if you can spot any in the November-February months. They will be spouting and flapping their tails, which is really remarkable to witness! From this same placard, you’ll also have great views of the natural tide pools below.
One nice part about this hike is that when you’re finished, there are some delicious spots to eat in either direction – we like to do it in the morning and then get a yummy brunch (19 Delicious Brunch Spots on Oahu), but you really can’t go wrong heading into Waimanalo and grabbing lunch at Serg’s or Ai Love Nalo either.
