One of my most popular posts is How Much Does It Cost To Live In Hawaii? — and I can understand why. I think that understanding the cost of living in Hawaii is important, particularly if you have plans to move here.
One detail that I didn’t expand upon too much is living expenses in Hawaii and average costs associated. I get a fair amount of questions like “How much does a gallon of milk cost in Hawaii?” and “How much does it cost to ___?”, so I decided to put together a post that helps to answer those questions as best as possible. If you’ve been curious about this topic, stick around as I break down the cost of living expenses in Hawaii.
Cost Of Living In Hawaii: Living Expenses
Groceries In Hawaii
To start, I took a trip to the store to snap some photos of average cost of groceries in Hawaii. I picked a handful of things that are probably popular with most people! I went to Target and Costco. To be fair, if you’re a military family in Hawaii, shopping at the commissary is a good way to go since you can save a decent amount there. Otherwise, Costco is my top choice!

Costco Grocery Prices In Hawaii
This was a huge Costco trip we did before Christmas that was both a restock of our usual items (organic eggs, mac nut milk, produce, etc), it also included quite a few treat items! I’m sharing the full receipt so if there are particular items you are interested in, you might be able to gauge the pricing.
As you can see, prices vary (and they go up and down all year long), but one thing remains the same, so many of these items expire much more quickly than on the mainland and not any one store has exactly everything I need so usually at least two trips are required, which becomes annoying. Also important to note, if you want to shop at Costco, you also need to factor in the price of the membership each year.
Restaurant Prices In Hawaii
Here are a few examples of the cost of restaurants in Hawaii. Of course, this one varies significantly depending on what type of restaurant you go to, if it’s in a highly trafficked tourist area, etc.
Here is an example of the cost of cocktails in Hawaii. They for getting a good deal on cocktails is finding a good happy hour!
And finally – what does it cost to fill up your car with gas in Hawaii?
Gas Prices In Hawaii
Right now, gas is really cheap and these photos were snapped at the on-base gas station where it is arguably cheaper than most places outside the gate. Another cheap place to get gas is Costco! Gas alone makes the membership worth it if you are not affiliated with the military!
I hope this post was helpful in sharing a little bit of insight on the cost of living here in the Hawaiian Islands. Of course, these prices are always changing and there are sales, happy hours and ways to save just like anywhere else 🙂
