Are you a sour candy lover? I’ve been a candy connoisseur since childhood + I’m sharing where to find the best sour candy!
Anyone who knows me in real life is probably laughing out loud reading this post. All of my life, I have been a candy lover. Any kind of candy – I will try nearly anything. But sour candy is my kryptonite and I always have a full supply.
In fact, when we went to Iceland, our friends were delighted to see I had pre-packed a supply of Sour Patch Kids. What can I say – I like to be prepared 😉
One of my favorite things to do when we travel is pick up candy from other countries and test it out. I’ve found some of the most delicious sugar rushes this way, but truthfully it’s such a bummer when I eat them all, because I’ve found it’s increasingly hard to find the good stuff in the States!
The Best Sour Candy You Can Buy + Where To Find It
Before we dive into the specifics, one thing that I want to point out is that I store all my candy (particularly gummies!) in the refrigerator. People find this really weird, but let me tell you something, I don’t know a single person who has tried it and gone back to eating room temperature gummies. Just saying!
Sour Patch Kids
Let me address the elephant in the room. Do I like SPK? Yes. Do I think they are the supreme best sour candy? No. If you had asked me ten years ago, I may have said yes, but unfortunately they just aren’t sour to me anymore. This has actually been confirmed by many people on social media, Reddit, and beyond, and not just because I’ve burned off all my taste buds.
I am, however, intrigued by the make-your-own Sour Patch Kids bundle where you can pick the flavors you want. I would 100% do an entire satchel of grape and white pineapple. Moving on…
Bulk Sour Candy
I’ve talked about this before, but Albanese makes a mean gummy. The texture is great and the flavors are delicious, but one thing they do really, really well is a sour gummy. I rank them, because it’s not just sour when you immediately put it in your mouth with the sugar. It stays sour throughout and makes it overall one of my top picks.
I have to be honest – I wasn’t sure what to think about Smart Sweets…better-for-you candy?! But I can honestly tell you that Smart Sweets Sour Bears are really good and worth it to grab a bag if you’re trying to be mindful of sugar intake. I FOR SURE thought they would taste gross (sorry, but I did) and I can honestly say, I would reach for them if I had them in my own house and frequently take them to the beach. The smaller packages help me with portion control, which I’m admittedly terrible with when it comes to sweets.
Most Sour Candy
Sadly, some of the best sour snacks I’ve gotten have been abroad and it’s really hard to get them in the United States. They are as follows, so if you ever see them, snag a bag!
Maynards Sour Fruit Jubes – These come in a bright yellow bag and sort of look like gum drops. Trust me when I tell you they have the biggest sour kick. I was given a bag of these during our trip to South Africa and I was absolutely hooked. Every time I saw a gas station, I stopped to grab some. In fact, I just ate my last bag and it’s devastating!
Note: Sometimes these are called Wine Gums and you’ll see them in the U.S., but it’s not the same thing, so don’t be tricked.
Haribo – Now, before we dive into the wonderful world of Haribo, I need to make a sort of controversial statement. Haribo gummy candy that is made in Europe versus what is made in the United States tastes different. I don’t know how or why, but it does. That said, if I ever find myself in a European duty free store, WATCH OUT….I will buy it out of Haribo candy. It’s so much better and I will never understand why. If anyone has intel, please let me know.
Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, there are a few types that I will buy regardless of where I am, because the flavor is the best I’ve had. Sour Goldbears are my favorite, but Sour S’ghetti is a close second. The Sour Schnuller are also REALLY tasty, but not always in stock.
Sour Belts Candy
Sour Power Belts – My friend Sarah gifted me these sour belts and holy heck! First of all, they come in a huge tub, which I obviously put immediately into my refrigerator. I got the rainbow flavor and they are really flipping sour. I even gave them to my friend’s kids and they agreed. I know this, because when I watched them eat the belts they closed their eyes and opened their mouth really wide. A sure sign there is something sour happening 😉
As you can see, I’m very passionate about sour candy, HA! In any case, if you have a favorite, definitely let me know so I can test it out!
