Freelance Writing Pitch Example

Life, Lifestyle · March 14, 2021 · Leave a Comment

Every writer is always looking for more freelance writing jobs, right? A good pitch is the best place to start! Here is a freelance writing pitch example to get your foot in the door with editors.

When I first started freelance writing, one of the hardest parts was crafting a good pitch. It can be really intimidating! Over the years, I’ve perfected my pitch and gotten some of my dream freelance writing jobs.

If you are just starting out, I’ve created a freelance writing pitch example that you might find helpful, along with a couple tips for what to include.

Freelance Writing Pitch Example - Every writer is always looking for freelance writing jobs, right? Here is a pitch example to get you started!

How To Pitch For Freelance Writing

Once you’ve determined that an outlet is accepting freelance pitches, it’s time to sell your story! That’s what a pitch is – an opportunity for you to succinctly tell an editor why it’s the right time to cover this, why you’re the right person to write it, and how you intend to craft the story.

Cold Pitching Freelance Writing

If it’s an editor I’ve never met before (this is called cold pitching!), I introduce myself, my location, and a few relevant outlets I’ve previously written for, being sure to link a relevant story I’ve written so they can see an example of my work.

Don’t forget – editors do not have a ton of time, so your pitch is not the time to go into great detail about your story or how you plan to cover it. It’s really important to understand that editors are busy people – consider your pitch your “elevator speech” to the publication.

Freelance Writing Pitch Example

Hi EDITOR’S NAME,

My name is Kait Hanson and I’m a Honolulu-based freelance writer and photographer. My work has previously appeared in Coastal Living and Military Spouse Magazine, and I am a regular contributor to the TODAY Show. (Don’t forget to link relevant work!)

I’m reaching out to you today with a story idea for OUTLET NAME on TOPIC. (Make sure this is brief, but interesting! For example, I’m reaching out to you today with a story idea for Military Spouse on what deployed soldiers really want in care packages from home.)

Why now? This is an opportunity for you to elaborate on why this topic is important to cover now. (Peg it to what is happening in the news, an upcoming holiday, etc)

For __ years now, I have lived on this island/used this product/experience this situation, and I would love to cover it in-depth for OUTLET NAME. (This gives you a chance to sell the editor on why you are the best person to cover this specific topic)

If this is a story you are interested in, I would love to chat further!

Thank you so much for your time,

Kait Hanson

I hope this freelance writing pitch example was helpful! If you’re a freelancer, what are your best pitching tips? If you’re trying to break into the field, what questions do you have?
