Looking for a clever couples Halloween costume? Here’s how to create my DIY tequila shot costume!
I have a confession to make – I’m not great at Halloween costumes. In fact, I don’t love Halloween very much when it comes to holidays. What I do love, however, is any opportunity to wear a costume! A few years ago, Dane and I dressed up as a tequila shot – complete with a taco dog – and it is still one of my favorite memories.
Tequila Shot Couples Halloween Costume
For Halloween 2015, we went as a tequila shot and the entire costume (aside from Judy’s taco suit) was a DIY. I swear I have blogged this before, but I recently got an email asking about it, and I cannot, for the life of me, find the blog post. In any case, if you’re on the hunt for a great couples Halloween costume, this funny tequila shot idea might be for you. My only regret is that I don’t have better photos!
This costume was so easy, and if you’re great at sewing, that’s going to be an even bigger perk! The first thing I did was go to Walmart and buy fabric. Hawaii has a great fabric shop, but I didn’t know a ton about it at the time. Here’s the deal – you don’t need top of the line fabric to make this work.

I purchased silky silver fabric to recreate my Patron “dress”, tan fabric for my tequila bottle cork, thick green ribbon for around my neck, and green felt in two shades for Dane’s lime sash.
I had a neighbor at the time who was a very talented seamstress and offered to help me. She created a “dress” from the silky strapless dress from the silver fabric by inserting elastic. When she finished that, I free-handed the Patron label with a black Sharpie marker.
For my cork “hat”, she used the tan fabric to make a ball, and we attached it to a headband. The night of Halloween, I put the green ribbon around my neck and used a safety pin to keep it in place.

For Dane’s lime sash, I took one giant piece of dark green felt and wrapped it across his body (like a sash) while he was standing up. I pinned it in place so it fit him securely, and cut the excess. I used fabric glue to connect the sides, then flipped it inside out so it looked “seamless”. Honestly, fabric glue is freaking amazing. Using the lighter color green felt, I cut out a wedge shape, then used the excess pieces of dark green felt to make accents.
This was definitely one of our more memorable Halloween nights! If you attempt this costume or something similar, I’d love to see it, so be sure to let me know 🙂
