Looking for a fun at-home date night? Here’s what you need to know about staying in to enjoy raclette cheese for a unique dinner!
If you’re like me, raclette might be new to you. If you are me a couple years ago, you might not have any idea what raclette is! Today I’m sharing this fun dinner idea for you and your spouse, or to have with friends.
How To Make Raclette
First of all – what is raclette? It’s a Swiss meal that gained popularity in skiing culture comprised of melting cheese and scraping it out of a pan over potatoes, vegetables, bread, etc. The word derives from the French word ‘racler’ which means — to scrape.
If you’re getting this dish at a restaurant, they may scrape the cheese from a giant wheel, but if you’re doing it at home, where you don’t necessarily have a huge wheel of cheese (LOL), there are little raclette grills.
Raclette Grill
One of Dane’s co-workers gifted him a raclette grill, we fired it up to enjoy it at home. We had previously enjoyed this fun fondue-ish (similar taste, different concept) at the co-workers house and it was delicious but I was a little intimidated by 1. finding the cheese and 2. figuring out what to pair with it.
Raclette Cheese
The good news is that we easily found the cheese at Whole Foods. Our normal grocer didn’t stock it, but it was right in the cheese case at Whole Foods. One package was around $9. I’m not sure if that’s normal or if that’s Hawaii, and I got two packages, which was more than enough for two people.
Raclette Recipes
Once I had the cheese, I decided to go really simple with pairings. I chose boiled potatoes, and chopped vegetables and Dane had some pickles, because…as is tradition with this dish!
Raclette Dinner
After we had everything we needed, it was time to get started. We plugged in the grill and got it nice and hot so we could warm up our veggies and put the cheese into the tiny trays below. While our veggies were heating, we noticed our cheese wasn’t melting at all. We messed around with it a little bit, but nothing seemed to work and it never got hot. Ice cold!
The good news is that if you 1. don’t have a grill or 2. don’t want to buy a grill, this meal is REALLY easy to make on the stove. Once our vegetables cooked, we heated up the raclette cheese in a frying pan over medium heat and poured it over our meal. So easy!
We ate it with forks and went back for seconds, and paired it with a nice glass of wine. It was a really simple date night idea for at home, but I think this would be really fun with a group of friends. The more the merrier, right?
