It’s hard to believe we’ve already been in Washington, D.C. area for a month! Time has flown. Truly. I also think back on the last two months and wonder how I’m still standing. Let’s re-wind a little bit, shall we?
We got into D.C. on December 18 after packing up 10 years worth of life in Hawaii in a whirlwind pack-out, flying to Los Angeles, and then driving with the dogs from Los Angeles to the East coast. As soon as we hit the East coast, we headed up to my parent’s house to celebrate Christmas, which was wonderful. It’s been many years since I’ve seen my family at Christmas time, much less had a chilly holiday!
After Christmas, Dane and I were able to get boosted, which took us out for a couple days, so we stayed at my parent’s house through the end of 2021, and drove to our new house (again) on January 1. Admittedly, coming back to a fully empty house was hard. In so many ways this feels like a fresh start, but we’ve been living out of suitcases since November 15, and that gets pretty old. More on that later.
The next day, we got a winter snow storm that took out our power. East coast weather has felt a bit like baptism by fire! The dogs loved their snow day, and Dane and I got to resuscitate our Scouting skills to build a fire to keep warm and make food.
For my birthday, Dane and I celebrated with two delicious meals here in the DMV. The first was at Call Your Mother for breakfast bagel sandwiches. We ordered the night before and picked them up first thing — so good!
For dinner we got a reservation at Rose’s Luxury and wow — absolutely a MUST!
Mid-January we went to Vegas for my dad’s birthday and ate our way through Sin City. Seriously some of the best food ever! Safe to say January was filled with a lot of delicious food and drinks.
And I guess that brings us to today, where we are still. living. out. of. a. suitcase. Can you tell I’m a little exasperated? We are thankful we’ve been able to borrow things from my parents, but it’s hard to feel settled in a new place without your stuff. We had pre-ordered a box mattress to the new address, so that’s what we’ve been sleeping on in the meantime, and one of my best friends from college loaned us a futon. Otherwise it’s floor sitting and paper plates here. We are very hopeful that February will bring our things, and a renewed sense of calm…at least for the next 11 months until we do all this again 😉
