Considering a stay at the Hay Adams Hotel in Washington, DC? Read my review before you book!
Last weekend, Dane surprised me with a stay at the Hay Adams Hotel in Washington, DC. He had been planning the weekend for awhile, and we had no clue that a giant snow storm in March would roll through, but such is life! Today I’m sharing all the details of our stay and whether or not booking the Hay Adams is worth the cost.
Our Stay At The Hay Adams Hotel
Located at 800 16th St NW, the Hay Adams Hotel is a popular spot due to proximity to the White House and other attractions in the area.
First things first – Dane booked our stay through the Fine Hotels and Resorts portal that comes along with our AMEX card. He did this, because it includes free breakfast each morning ($30 credit per person, per morning), as well as a $100 voucher which could be used at the bar “Off The Record” in the basement. You can also get a late check-out at 4PM.
We stayed in room 808, which we both thought was hysterical. That’s the Hawaii area code for anyone who might be new here 🙂
It offered the most beautiful views of the city, namely the White House. The first night we were there, the sunset was gorgeous. We had no idea we would wake up and have snow all over the ground.
Rooms At The Hay Adams Hotel
The bed was comfortable and the room was clean. Many of the hotel workers still wore masks, and we were given the option to have our room cleaned daily, as well as turn down service. Have to give a huge shout out for the toiletries selection – top notch – and the daily selection of newspapers we could have delivered.
Of course, the reason people tend to book this hotel is not for the bed or toiletries, it’s for the history and panoramic views of the White House, as well as proximity to so much in downtown DC.
I’m happy to say, all of the above make it worth the splurge, particularly the views. Though we didn’t have the greatest weather, we were still able to walk everywhere and of course, enjoy sunrise/sunset over the Capitol.
White House View – Washington, DC
We used our bar credit at “Off The Record” in the basement of the hotel and we loved it. The cocktails are pricey, but the pear martini is delicious, and with a $100 credit, we could each enjoy 2.
Off The Record Bar
The bar is a cozy space with an upscale vibe, and while we dressed up a bit, we saw everything from jeans to suits. There is a political vibe to the space and the coasters are all caricatures of recognizable politicians, which is funny.
Like I mentioned above, the snowstorm really threw us off in terms of going out and doing things in the area, but the snow sure did look pretty, and to be honest, relaxing in our room, using the on-site gym, visiting the bar, and eating in the Lafayette dining room made us feel like we got our money’s worth.
So, would I recommend the hotel for a staycation or visit to Washington, DC? Definitely. I loved the historical elements and the views are second to none. That said, I would be remiss in not mentioning that it is pricey, and there are many other options in the area to stay too. If you choose to stay elsewhere, definitely pop in the hotel and just take a peek, or have a drink at the bar. Worth it!
