Spill something on your woven rug or just trying to figure out how to clean a jute rug and freshen things up? Today’s blog post is for you!
If you’ve ever been to my house, you know I love a jute rug. That said, if you’ve been to my house, you also know I have two huge dogs who run this place. And the one thing I never – ever – want…is for my house to smell like dogs. So I clean my carpets, furniture and rugs pretty frequently to pick up hair and dander.
Jute rugs are becoming increasingly popular due to their natural look and durability. They are made from jute fibers, which are derived from the stem of the jute plant. These fibers are spun into a thread, which is then woven into a rug. Jute rugs are great for adding texture and warmth to a room, but they can be a challenge to clean. Today I’m going to share some basic tips and a step-by-step guide on how to clean a jute rug like a pro….or at least like me 😉
How To Clean A Jute Rug
Step 1: Vacuum the Rug
The first step in cleaning a jute rug is to vacuum it thoroughly. Use a vacuum cleaner with a beater bar attachment to remove any dirt, dust, or debris from the rug.
Step 2: Spot Clean Stains
If there are any stains on your jute rug, you can spot clean them with a mixture of warm water and mild dish soap. Dip a clean cloth into the solution and blot the stain gently. Avoid rubbing the stain, as this can damage the fibers.
Step 3: Dry the Rug
After spot cleaning, you should use a clean, dry cloth to blot the area and remove any excess moisture. Then, allow the rug to air dry completely before walking on it again.
Step 4: Deep Clean the Rug
If your jute rug needs a deep clean, you can use a dry cleaning powder specifically designed for jute rugs. Sprinkle the powder over the rug and use a stiff brush to work it into the fibers. Then, vacuum the powder up thoroughly.
Homemade Cleaning Solutions for Jute Rugs
You can also make your own cleaning solutions for jute rugs at home. Here are two “recipes” to consider:
Recipe 1: Vinegar and Baking Soda Solution
Mix one cup of white vinegar and one tablespoon of baking soda in a spray bottle. Spray the solution onto the rug and let it sit for a few minutes. Then, use a clean cloth to blot the area and remove the excess moisture. Allow the rug to air dry completely.
Recipe 2: Lemon Juice and Salt Solution
Mix one cup of lemon juice and one tablespoon of salt in a spray bottle. Spray the solution onto the stain and let it sit for a few minutes. Then, use a clean cloth to blot the area and remove the excess moisture. Allow the rug to air dry completely.
Frequently Asked Questions About Cleaning Jute Rugs
Are jute rugs hard to clean?
In my experience, no. They’re not hard to clean at all. The only thing I’ve noticed is that with aggressive scrubbing, they do tend to shed their fibers.
Can jute rugs be washed?
No, just rugs cannot be washed like you might launder other rugs in a washing machine. Ask me how I know. Just kidding – but I did consider it once for a red wine stain on a tiny jute rug we had outside. I wound up just using a hose and Dawn dish soap. I don’t know if that is the *right* way to handle that, but it worked. In any case, jute rugs are made with natural fibers so they’re not machine washable.
Can I use a steam cleaner on a jute rug?
No, you should never use a steam cleaner on a jute rug, as the moisture can cause the fibers to shrink or distort.
Can I use a bleach-based cleaner on a jute rug?
No, you should avoid using any cleaning products that contain bleach or ammonia, as these can damage the fibers.
Cleaning your jute rug regularly is important to keep it looking its best and to prolong its lifespan. Remember to vacuum your rug regularly, spot clean any stains as soon as possible, and deep clean the rug when necessary, especially if you’re the owner of two happy-go-lucky Labradors like me 🙂
