11 Best Places To Go On Safari In Kenya
Whether you want to see the Great Wildebeest Migration, spot rare species or explore diverse landscapes, Kenya’s safari destinations provide an unforgettable experience. In order to put together this complete list, I’ve asked friends and tour operators in Kenya to help me in putting this post together since Dane and I have only been to about half and that doesn’t offer the full picture of what Kenya has to offer 🙂
Maasai Mara National Reserve
Located in southwestern Kenya, the Maasai Mara is renowned for its awe-inspiring wildebeest migration, which takes place between July and October. Here, you can witness massive herds crossing the Mara River, where hungry crocodiles lie in wait. The reserve is also home to the Big Five (lion, elephant, leopard, rhinoceros, and buffalo) and offers exceptional opportunities for wildlife photography. I put it at the top, because it’s my favorite area.
Amboseli National Park
Nestled at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, Amboseli National Park boasts breathtaking vistas and large herds of elephants roaming freely against the backdrop of Africa’s highest peak. The park’s diverse habitats support an abundance of wildlife, including lions, cheetahs, giraffes, and zebras. The dry season (July to October) is the best time to visit Amboseli for optimal wildlife viewing. I have to say, there is really nothing quite like waking up and seeing Kili!
Tsavo East + Tsavo West
Covering a vast expanse of land, Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Parks offer a raw and untamed safari experience. Tsavo East is famous for its red elephants, while Tsavo West’s attractions include the stunning Mzima Springs and the lava flows of the Chyulu Hills. These parks are known for their truly diverse landscapes, from open plains to dense forests, providing an opportunity to spot so many different types of wildlife species such as lions, leopards and buffalo. Tsavo West is a favorite of ours…the green jungle feel cannot be beat!
Samburu National Reserve
Located in northern Kenya, the Samburu National Reserve is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts seeking a unique safari experience. The reserve is home to rare species such as the reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra and Somali ostrich. Elephants, lions, cheetahs, and leopards are also frequently spotted here. The dry season (June to September) is an ideal time to visit when animals gather near the Ewaso Ng’iro River.
Lake Nakuru National Park
Nestled around the sparkling Lake Nakuru, this national park is renowned for its flamingo population, creating a sea of mesmerizing pink. Apart from flamingos, the park is a sanctuary for white and black rhinoceros, lions, giraffes, and numerous bird species. Visit during the dry months (January to March and July to October) for optimal birdwatching and wildlife sightings.
Aberdare National Park
Situated in the central highlands of Kenya, the Aberdare National Park is a haven for hikers and nature enthusiasts. Its lush forests are home to unique species such as the bongo antelope, giant forest hog and golden cat. The park’s high altitude and misty climate add to its allure, but be prepared for cooler temperatures. Game drives and guided walks are popular activities here.
Mount Kenya National Park
Embrace the adventure of climbing Africa’s second-highest peak, Mount Kenya, or explore the surrounding national park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The wide ranging ecosystems on the mountain’s slopes are home to a variety of wildlife, including elephants, buffalo, monkeys, and rare species like the bongo antelope and Mount Kenya mouse shrew. The best time to visit is during the dry seasons from January to February and July to September.
Meru National Park
Made famous by the book and film “Born Free,” Meru National Park offers a serene and off-the-beaten-path safari experience. The park’s landscapes include riverine forests, savannahs and swamps, attracting a large range of wildlife. Visitors can spot elephants, lions, leopards, hippos and over 400 bird species. Meru National Park is less crowded than other popular parks, providing a more intimate wildlife experience.
Laikipia Plateau
Located in the central highlands of Kenya, the Laikipia Plateau is a vast wildlife conservancy renowned for its exceptional biodiversity. The area offers a unique blend of game drives, walking safaris, and cultural interactions with local communities. Visitors can witness the endangered Grevy’s zebra, African wild dogs, black rhinoceros and numerous bird species. The best time to visit is during the dry seasons, from July to October and January to March.
Buffalo Springs National Reserve
Adjacent to the Samburu National Reserve, Buffalo Springs offers a quieter and more intimate safari experience. The reserve is named after the clear springs that attract wildlife during the dry season. Visitors can encounter elephants, giraffes, cheetahs, and diverse birdlife. Game drives, guided walks, and cultural visits to Samburu communities are popular activities in this unique reserve.
Best Time To Visit Kenya
While Kenya’s safari destinations offer incredible wildlife experiences, wildlife sightings can vary, and it’s important to manage expectations. Additionally, some areas may have challenging road conditions during the rainy season, requiring careful planning and a reliable safari operator (We use Flyga Twiga).
The best time to visit Kenya for a safari experience is during the dry seasons, which generally run from June to October and January to March. During these periods, wildlife congregates around water sources, making it easier to spot animals and enjoy optimal game viewing.
