8 Restaurants To Try In Nairobi

Africa, Kenya, Travel · July 6, 2023 · Leave a Comment

Heading to Kenya and spending some time in the capital city? Here are 8 restaurants in Nairobi to try out during your stay!

I have to be honest, the first time we visited Nairobi, I had no idea what to expect. Having made several trips in and around Kenya’s capital city, I can honestly say it’s an amazing place filled with so much charm….and delicious food. From traditional Kenyan fare to international cuisines, Nairobi offers a big variety of restaurants that cater to both locals and travelers. With a population of more than 4 million, there is truly something for everyone! Today I’m sharing 8 restaurants to try during your next visit 🙂

8 Restaurants In Nairobi You Can’t Miss

Let me be honest – you could be in Nairobi for weeks and weeks and weeks and not eat at all the amazing restaurants. Whether you’re a local or a traveler, these 8 restaurants offer excellent food and overall dining experience, showcasing the best of Kenyan and international dishes.

Carnivore

Located on Lang’ata Road, Carnivore is a meat lovers paradise. The restaurant’s “Beast of a Feast” offers an unlimited parade of grilled meats, including game meats such as crocodile, ostrich and camel (big pass for me, but it’s definitely available). Don’t miss out on the Kenyan nyama choma (barbecued meat), which is super tender and filled with flavor.

Talisman

Situated in the Nairobi suburb of Karen, Talisman is a charming restaurant with a tranquil ambiance and a fusion menu. It’s one of our favorite places for samosas and dawa cocktails and I’ve noticed it seems to be a hangout spot for expats. If you’re still hungry for dessert, the Dark Chocolate Fondant with salted caramel ice cream is an absolute delight.

Nyama Mama

Nyama Mama in Westlands celebrates the flavors of Kenyan street food with a modern twist. Their menu features a range of dishes, but the must-try option (in my opinion) is the traditional Ugali (maize meal) and sukuma wiki (collard greens). It’s a truly authentic Kenyan food experience that you’ve got to have at least once.

About Thyme

About Thyme, also in Westlands, is a restaurant offering a fusion of Mediterranean and Kenyan flavors. Try their signature dish, the Pan-Fried Tilapia Fillet with lemon butter sauce and garlic mashed potatoes. The combination of flavors and textures will leave you wanting more. I also love their passionfruit dawa.

Fogo Gaucho

Another stop for meat lovers! Fogo Gaucho is a must-visit restaurant in Westlands if meat is at the top of your “to eat” list. The highlight of the dining experience is the continuous tableside service of various flame-grilled meats, including Picanha (top sirloin), lamb chops, and succulent sausages. Be sure to accompany your meal with their refreshing caipirinha cocktail.

Cultiva

Cultiva, located in Karen, is a true farm-to-table establishment. Everything is locally sourced and the presentation s just absolutely amazing. The menu rotates with the seasons and what is available from local farms, but trust me when I say that anything on their sourdough bread is a can’t miss!

Open House

Located in Karen, Open House brings the flavors of Thailand to Nairobi. Their famous dish is Pad Thai noodles, prepared with stir-fried rice noodles, shrimp, tofu, and crushed peanuts, really hits the spot.

Jiko

Inside Tribe Hotel, Jiko is a true fusion of African and international flavors. The restaurant reopened in 2022 and the menu features everything from pulled pork sandwiches to Tandoori lobster. Don’t miss the smoked eggplant samosas!
