Thinking about planning a trip to Hawaii this fall? Here is a full guide on what to do on Oahu in September, including what the weather may be like and events to attend.
As the summer crowds start to dwindle and the island of Oahu begins to embrace the gentle (and I mean very gentle) transition into fall, September is a perfect time to visit this tropical paradise. With comfortable temperatures, exciting festivals, and a variety of activities to choose from, Oahu offers a memorable vacation experience for travelers seeking a unique blend of relaxation and adventure. Today I’m sharing what to do on Oahu in September, including what kind of weather to expect and events to attend.
What To Do On Oahu In September
As the summer months fade into the fall, visiting Hawaii might seem like the best place to travel. Spoiler alert: Oahu is always a good idea. But prices sometimes drop a bit after the hot hot hot summer months.
Average Weather and Temperatures For Oahu In September
Oahu’s weather in September is best characterized as: warm temperatures and trade winds that help keep the stifling humidity in check. Also known as: You’re not going to be so hot that you stick to the chair!
The average daytime high hovers around 85°F (29°C), while nighttime lows drop to around 70°F (21°C). These mild temperatures create an ideal environment for exploring the island’s stunning landscapes and participating in outdoor activities, like hiking.
Fair warning, while September is generally drier than the summer months and it’s not *quite* rainy season yet, occasional brief showers can occur, so it’s a good idea to pack a light rain jacket. Most hotels even offer umbrellas you can use during the day if you’re headed out around Waikiki and want to make sure you stay dry.
Perfect Oahu Hikes For September
Lanikai Pillbox Hike – Easily one of my very favorite on the island for the views alone, definitely hit this one for sunrise if you can! The pastel skies will leave you absolutely speechless and once the sun rises, you’ll be able to see all the shades of turquoise in the water.
Pink Pillbox Hike – The reward at the top of this quick hike is a pretty pink pillbox where you can sit and watch the waves or (in the winter months) spot whales! Be sure to heed the warning in my original post (linked) about the parking and bring your camera with you for fun pillbox photos 🙂
Diamond Head Crater – This iconic hike is truly a must on Oahu and everyone from here to Big Island has written about it. You can’t come to Honolulu and not summit Diamond Head Crater! It’s synonymous with the Honolulu skyline and offers panoramic ocean views. Definitely give it a go! But fair warning: You have to pay to park if you use the lot at the base of the hike.
Festivals and Events On Oahu In September
September on Oahu brings an array of festivals that showcase the island’s rich culture and traditions. Here are a few must-attend events:
Aloha Festivals: This annual celebration of Hawaiian culture spans the entire month of September and features a series of events, including parades, hula performances, music concerts and craft fairs. The largest event, the Waikiki Hoolaulea, transforms Kalakaua Avenue into a street festival with food booths, live entertainment and traditional Hawaiian arts and crafts.
Okinawan Festival: Started in 1982 by the Hawaii United Okinawa Association, the Okinawan Festival celebrates all things Okinawan and brings together Okinawans and Okinawans-at-heart. The festival includes food, performances and educational exhibits.
Hawaii International Film Festival: Film enthusiasts will appreciate the chance to catch international and Pacific Rim films during this renowned festival. Screenings take place at various venues across the island, providing a unique cultural experience for attendees. **Worth noting this sometimes occurs in August**
