Sharing all the details on design, fit, weather resistance and versatility in my honest Athleta Rainier Tights review!
If you have talked to anyone who is familiar with the brand Athleta and lives in a 4-season climate, they’ve likely chatted to you about the Rainier Tights. They’re fitness tights that are specifically made for medium and high impact workouts in cold climates. My mom has had a pair (or two) for years and then I was walking with a friend one day who said she wears them for not just working out and my ears perked up. Admittedly, I don’t have a ton of cold (or even cool) weather workout gear, so I decided to go all in and ask for a pair for Christmas. Today, I’m sharing my honest thoughts in a full Athleta Rainier Tights review.
My Honest Review Of Athleta’s Rainier Tights
Design and Fit
The first thing that struck me about the Rainier Tight was its design. The leggings feature a sleek aesthetic with subtle yet, stylish details that make them stand out. The high-rise waist provides excellent coverage and support and the fit is snug without being restrictive. Athleta has clearly put a lot of thought into the ergonomic design, ensuring that the Rainier Tight moves with my body, whether I’m running, hiking, or walking with a friend. The four-way stretch fabric allows for a full range of motion, and the flatlock seams prevent any chafing or discomfort.
I wear my normal Athleta pants size (XS) and they fit great. The only thing I find a little bit annoying – and look, even perfect pants have stuff like this – is that there is an ENORMOUS THICK TAG right on the waistband. It’s 4 little silk tags made into one. Athleta has put cut lines in to easily remove it, but it feels wildly unnecessary for it to be there at all in my opinion.
Weather Resistance
I was originally drawn to the Rainier Tight for its water-resistant features and semi-fleece lining after a friend of mine wore them when we were walking on a cooler morning. She told me they were some of her favorite pants for late-fall and winter here in DC. The leggings are treated with a durable water repellent (DWR) finish, which effectively repels light rain and snow. During a recent drizzly walk with Judy, I was surprised by how well the Rainier Tight kept me dry (and warm!). That said, when it began raining a bit harder, I did notice some water absorption, but the leggings dried quickly once I got home, so there is that.
The fleece lining is warm without being too hot and sticky (like true fleece) if you work up a sweat during a workout, which is personally a huge win for me. I love soaking up as much nice weather as NOVA has to offer, but once it gets cooler, I’m less inclined to just wear regular leggings. These are a good compromise.
Versatility
What sets the Rainier Tight apart is its versatility. It’s not just a rain-resistant legging; it’s a true all-around legging in my opinion. The breathable fabric keeps me comfortable during workouts, and the moisture-wicking technology ensures that sweat is quickly pulled away from my skin. From the gym to casual outings, these leggings transition from one activity to the next.
Durability
After several weeks of rigorous use at this point, Athleta’s Rainier Tight has shown impressive durability. The fabric holds up well against wear (no weird pilling where my legs touch), and the color hasn’t faded despite numerous washes. The reinforced stitching gives me confidence that they’re a total closet must-have and will withstand the test of time…and a lot of washing.
My mirror clearly needs cleaned in the below photo but it gives you a better idea of a full length view!
Are The Athleta Rainier Tights Worth The Money?
At $109, the tights are an investment and I won’t pretend they’re not. For me, that means one pair I wear to death and I’m OK with that, because the cost per wear will even out in the end. Do I think they are worth the money? Yes, I absolutely do. Since Christmas, I’ve already worn them 6 times and it’s only been 10 days…..I think it’s a safe bet I am obsessed and this pair will last me. If you live in a 4-season climate, or heck even a mostly cold climate, I’d say these tights are worth the spend. Also worth noting, Athleta has no idea who I am and I wasn’t compensated in any way for writing this – just sharing something I found + love.
