Considering starting a round of Whole30? Here’s what to know before you start + my best Whole30 tips for success.
Deciding to start a Whole30 journey is a transformative experience that can reset your body, eliminate unhealthy cravings, and establish a healthier relationship with food. However, navigating the 30-day challenge requires dedication, preparation, and a positive mindset, with a heavy emphasis on preparation. My first round of Whole30 was absolutely miserable, but because I wasn’t prepared mentally or physically. Know now that you will be doing dishes. So, so, so many dishes.
10 Whole30 Tips To Set You Up For Success
Know The Program: Before diving into Whole30, familiarize yourself with the program’s rules and principles. Understanding the purpose behind eliminating certain foods will strengthen your commitment and make it easier to navigate potential challenges. This was a big part of it for me. The first time I did a round of Whole30, I didn’t understand the “why” behind elimination and I think it made my experience harder.
Plan and Prep: Success on Whole30 often comes down to preparation. Plan your meals for the week, create a shopping list, and dedicate time to prep ingredients in advance. Having compliant foods readily available will prevent you from reaching for non-compliant options in moments of hanger. Just trust me on this one!
Stock Up on Whole30 Staples: Fill your pantry and fridge with Whole30-compliant staples like lean proteins, fresh vegetables, fruits, and healthy fats. This will ensure you always have nutritious options on hand, making meal planning and preparation more straightforward. The program itself offers an easy-to-follow Whole30 shopping list, but I’ll be honest – I didn’t buy half of what’s on there based on personal preference.
Read Labels: It’s really, really important to become a label detective during your Whole30 round. Many seemingly innocent products may contain hidden sugars, additives, or preservatives that are off-limits. Get accustomed to reading labels thoroughly to make informed choices. By week 2, I found it easiest to just repeat what I had done on week 1 to remove the guess work.
Experiment with New Recipes: Variety is key to preventing boredom and ensuring you enjoy your meals. Explore Whole30-approved recipes, try new cooking techniques, and experiment with different flavor combinations. This will keep your taste buds satisfied and make the program more enjoyable. Again, if it’s your first round, while getting “bored” with the food might be something you struggle with, there’s also ease in knowing exactly what you’re making by repeating recipes. Decide which camp you fall into and make it easy on yourself!
Stay Hydrated: Drinking enough water is essential for overall health, and it becomes even more crucial during Whole30. Water helps flush out toxins and keeps you hydrated. Add some variety by infusing water with citrus slices, herbs, or cucumber.
Be Mindful of Portions: While Whole30 encourages you to eat until satisfied, be mindful of portion sizes. Listen to your body’s hunger and fullness cues, and avoid overeating. This will help you better understand your body’s needs and foster a healthier relationship with food. I started to notice when I was full versus trying to finish my entire meal.
Find Whole30-Approved Snacks: Snacking can be a challenge on Whole30, but it’s not impossible. Identify compliant snacks like fresh fruits, vegetables with guacamole, or nuts to have on hand when hunger strikes between meals. This might be my most important tip after “be prepared” but I guess it’s also like being prepared. The more compliant snacks you have on hand, the easier the process is.
Stay Connected: Join online communities, forums, or social media groups dedicated to Whole30. Sharing your experiences, challenges, and victories with others on a similar journey can provide support, encouragement, and valuable insights. While I didn’t join any groups during any of my rounds, Dane and I have always done it together. When you’re in it with someone else (or even a small friend group), being able to chat about it makes the whole process easier. Also, if you have people in your house not following the Whole30 plan while you are, things can be dicey. Ask me how I know 😉
Celebrate Non-Scale Victories: Whole30 is not just about weight loss; it’s about improving your overall well-being. Celebrate the non-scale victories, such as improved energy levels, better sleep, clearer skin, and a positive mindset. Recognizing these achievements will keep you motivated throughout the 30 days, I promise!
