Have you ever wanted to tour the White House at Christmas? Here is a peek at the 2024 White House Christmas Decorations!
One of the big perks of being stationed in Washington, DC is being in such close proximity to some pretty cool events that happen throughout the year. Since we’ve been here (3 years now which is nuts!) one of the best perks is being able to tour the White House at Christmas time thanks to Dane’s job. There is nothing quite as magical as seeing everything dressed up in sparkly Christmas decor. Each year has a different theme and we were honored to be able to tour it this year with my parents!
A Peek Inside The 2024 White House Christmas Decorations
The 2024 theme is “A Season of Peace & Light” and I would say that the decor is a beautiful reflection of that. Each room is meticulously decorated by a team of volunteers — one of them this year was a military spouse who lives locally — and there is something new to see at every turn. From The President and First Lady on this year’s decorations:
“The holidays have always held a special place in our hearts, and we’ve loved opening the doors of the People’s House wider and wider each year, continuing the spirit of goodwill and gratitude. America’s story is your story, and we hope you feel at home here. As we celebrate our final holiday season here in the White House, we are guided by the values we hold sacred: faith, family, service to our country, kindness towards our neighbors, and the power of community and connection.”
The highlights for me this year included the Gold Star Tree, which is constructed of six oversized and stacked stars, representing all six branches of the military. Names of fallen service members are written on gold star ornaments on the four accompanying Christmas trees in the corners of the room. When you leave, you enter the East Colonnade which can only be described as something Buddy the Elf might have constructed…it truly felt like entering a Christmas wonderland with lots of greenery, lights, bells, and traditional Christmas colors (red, green, and gold).
This year you can actually walk into the Vermeil Room, China Room, and Library which is a nice departure from just peeking into them from the hallway (which is what was allowed in previous years), and for the first time ever you can walk through the Diplomatic Reception Room where all foreign dignitaries are greeted. It’s really special!
My favorite room this year is without a doubt the Blue Room where the official Christmas tree is located. This year, the tree (which hails from North Carolina), is surrounded by a light-filled, whimsical carousel, with names of every state, territory, and the District of Columbia, showcased throughout the tree’s decor.
Despite being totally different each year, visiting the White House at Christmas is an absolute must if you ever get the opportunity! And now what you have all been waiting for…the photos!
