Lululemon leggings are a staple in many wardrobes, mine included. Improper washing techniques can damage the fabric and shorten the lifespan of your favorite leggings and for the price, you want to keep those suckers in shape for as long as possible! Today I’m sharing best practices for washing your Lululemon leggings to keep them looking and feeling like new.
How To Wash Lululemon Leggings
It’s no secret I’m a big fan of Lululemon’s leggings and the Aligns are my favorite. That said, the price tag is high and they fall into the investment category for me. If you’ve splurged on a pair and want to keep them in top shape, here’s what you need to know about washing your Lulus.
Read the Care Label: Before you start washing your Lululemon leggings, it’s crucial to check the tag. Different fabrics and styles may have specific care instructions, such as temperature settings and recommended detergents. Following these instructions will help preserve the integrity of the fabric and ensure longevity. Lulu tags are the very long things that you often rip out right away so be sure to take a peek before you rip it!
Turn Them Inside Out: Turning your leggings inside out before washing helps protect the outer surface, which is often exposed to sweat, oils, and environmental debris. This simple step can help prevent pilling and maintain the color vibrancy of your leggings.
Wash in Cold Water: Lululemon recommends washing their leggings in cold water to prevent shrinkage and preserve the elasticity of the fabric. Cold water is also gentler on the fibers, reducing the risk of stretching or damage during the wash cycle.
Use a Gentle Detergent: Choose a mild detergent that is free from harsh chemicals and additives. Avoid using bleach or fabric softeners, as they can break down the fabric and compromise the performance of your leggings. Instead, opt for a detergent specifically designed for activewear or delicate fabrics.
Skip the Fabric Softener: While fabric softeners may leave your clothes feeling soft and smelling fresh, they can also create a residue that can build up on your leggings over time. This residue can trap bacteria and odors, leading to an unpleasant smell. Instead of fabric softener, consider adding a splash of white vinegar to the rinse cycle to help eliminate odors and restore the fabric’s softness.
Wash with Like Items: To prevent friction and reduce the risk of damage, wash your Lululemon leggings with similar fabrics and colors. Avoid washing them with rough or abrasive items like jeans or towels, as they can cause pilling and abrasions. I only wash my workout clothes with other workout clothes!
Air Dry: While it may be tempting to throw your leggings in the dryer for a quick dry, the heat can damage the fabric and affect the elasticity. Instead, lay your leggings flat to dry or hang them on a drying rack away from direct sunlight. Avoid hanging them by the waistband, as this can cause stretching. If you must use a dryer, use the lowest heat setting and remove the leggings promptly once they are dry.
Store Properly: After washing and drying your Lululemon leggings, store them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Avoid folding them along the seams, as this can cause creasing and distortion. Instead, lay them flat or roll them up to maintain their shape.
