Visiting Haleakalā at sunrise is a truly unforgettable experience that will truly leave you in awe. Planning in advance and waking up essentially in the middle of the night to make it are 100% worth it. By following these tips, you’ll be well-prepared to make the most of your journey to this iconic Maui landmark. So, set your alarm, bundle up, and get ready to welcome the dawn atop the breathtaking summit of Haleakalā.

Book In Advance: It’s important to know you can’t just drive up and expect to take in the views. You must make a reservation in advance. It’s $1 to reserve your spot and tickets can be booked 60 days in advance. It’s VERY popular so be sure to log on exactly when tickets become available for the day you want.

Know the Sunrise Time: Sunrise at Haleakalā varies throughout the year, so be sure to check the exact time for the day of your visit. On average, it occurs around 6:00 to 7:00 AM, but this can change with the seasons.

Arrive Early: To secure the best viewing spot and avoid the crowds, aim to arrive at least an hour before sunrise. Trust me, the early wake-up call is well worth it for the breathtaking views you’ll experience, but everyone wants to have the best view, so expect lots of people. 

Dress in Layers: While Maui’s beaches may be warm and balmy, Haleakalā’s summit can be surprisingly chilly, especially before dawn. Dress in layers to stay warm, including a jacket, hat, gloves, and sturdy shoes for walking.
