Today’s post is something a little bit different, but I love seeing real life or behind-the-scenes from other bloggers, so I wanted to share a little bit of something pretty real life! In my quest to live a more dairy free life (sometimes cheese and ice cream happen!), one of the items I really wanted to find a good replacement for was yogurt. I used to eat Greek yogurt in the morning and then I’d use it as a sour cream replacement in various meals, but it remained a staple in my diet.
So, when I first began my dairy free journey, yogurt became a top level priority. Here’s the real deal – dairy free yogurt is a mixed bag! The first dairy free yogurt brand I tried was bad. Really, really bad. And of course that just left me with a bad taste in my mouth regarding dairy free yogurts (pun fully intended). Dairy free yogurt mixed into things or in a sauce? No problem. Dairy free yogurt to be eaten on its own? Whole other bag of worms!
Recently, our Target started carrying way more dairy free products and their yogurt selection was impressive, so I decided to take another stab at the whole dairy free yogurt by itself thing. The brands I used for this taste test are Kite Hill, Silk and So Delicious. If you’re in the market for a good dairy free yogurt, read on to see how my taste test went!
Dairy Free Yogurt Taste Test
For starters, I bought the same flavor of each yogurt (or as close as I could), to try to keep things consistent. I bought Kite Hill Almond Milk Yogurt in Strawberry, Silk Almondmilk Yogurt in Strawberry and So Delicious Coconutmilk Yogurt in Strawberry Banana. If you’re cringing because of the banana part – believe me, I was too, but that’s the closest they had!
Dairy Free Yogurt Taste Test – Kite Hill Almond Milk Yogurt
I was most excited to try the Kite Hill, because it was the newest brand Target was carrying. I was really disappointed when I opened the container and right away saw that there were seeds in there. Chunks or seeds of any kind in a yogurt is a total no-go for me. Aside from that, the texture was a little bit lumpy when I first opened it (sometimes that happens), but I figured stirring it would make it better. It helped a little, but overall still looked a little different. That didn’t bother me, but I could tell as soon as I tasted it that this wasn’t going to be a winner. It has a definite almond milk aftertaste and if you’ve ever had a not-so-good dairy free product, you know what I’m talking about.
The taste was pretty tart (a plus for me), but the almond milk aftertaste plus the seeds made it a definitive no for me. One thing I think this could be great for would be incorporating it into a salad dressing or smoothie, but it’s not one I would eat on its own.
Dairy Free Yogurt Taste Test – Silk Almondmilk Yogurt
Next up was the Silk Almondmilk brand and I was excited for this one, because I have had good luck with Silk products overall. The texture of this yogurt is completely smooth, not chalky at all and has a good strawberry flavor (not too tart or sweet). When I opened it up there wasn’t a weird watery topping, but I gave it a good stir anyhow. I’ll be candid – I gobbled it down! I was really impressed with this one and there is zero almond milk aftertaste here.
Dairy Free Yogurt Taste Test – So Delicious Coconutmilk Yogurt
And finally, I tried the So Delicious Coconutmilk brand and admittedly – I went into it averse to the whole thing, because it was strawberry banana flavor and I’m not a banana kind of gal. Here’s where I’m about to shock you – this was my favorite yogurt of the three! It’s smooth, it’s not too sweet and tastes exactly like regular dairy-full yogurt. What I really liked, and I’m going to try to explain this as best as I can, was that it was really light and “fluffy”, not thick or with a weird texture. I think side by side on a regular strawberry yogurt, even people who love dairy would struggle to tell the difference.
And there you have it – my fun little dairy free yogurt taste test. It’s safe to say my opinion on dairy free yogurt has changed from what I initially thought and I’m excited to try more So Delicious flavors on their own as opposed to just mixing them into recipes (Silk + So Delicious are great for thickening up acai bowls!). Do you have a dairy free yogurt you love? Or a certain dairy free product (anything!) you love? Let me know so I can add it to my list to try!
