Wondering where you can go apple picking in northern Virginia? Mackintosh Fruit Farm in Berryville is a family-friendly spot!
One of the things I was looking forward to most when I found out we would be settling in DC for a bit was doing all the fall activities that we normally don’t get to do in Hawaii. One of those is apple picking! I knew we would have to head a little bit out of NOVA/DC to get the true experience and so we got on the road and headed to Mackintosh Fruit Farm in Berryville, VA. If you’re looking for the best spot to go apple picking, here’s what to know before you go!
Mackintosh Fruit Farm
I did a good bit of research before deciding on Mackintosh Fruit Farm and one of the top reasons I picked this spot for apple picking was that they grow Honeycrisp apples – our favorite! The cost to pick is $2 per person and the dogs were free. Parking is also free! You can grab bags for picking, bring your own boxes or even use one of the wagons they have on site. We chose to grab two bags that were provided (no charge).
Once you pay your admission fees, you’re free to go pick! We loved having roaming up and down the orchard and the dogs FOR SURE loved it. We started out with a wagon, which Judy loved, but then decided we probably didn’t need it and wanted to make sure families who were there could use it.
Once we had our fill of picking (there are so many!) we headed back to the front where there is a weigh station. The cost is $2.99 per pound and we wound up spending about $40 on apples. They also have a farm stand where they sell cider, cider donuts, honey, pumpkins and other seasonal treats. We picked up cider (oh gosh, it’s delicious) and dehydrated sweet potato bites for the dogs.
We didn’t get any, but they also have a cider house and made-to-order restaurant on site. Everything looked delicious and there was tons of outdoor picnic tables with ample room. If you have kids, there is a ton of space for them to run and play!
Apple Picking In Virginia
One thing I will say is that because it was a beautiful day outside, the farm was pretty crowded with families. It didn’t make the experience less enjoyable, but it’s one thing to know if your dog doesn’t like other people/animals. Overall, we would definitely go back and recommend it for anyone looking for a great fall experience.
